Colombia

Opportunity International's very first loan was made in Colombia in 1975. Since then, we've been working to provide stable financial systems as a way to reduce unemployment, social unrest, and violence in the country.

Learn More

Dominican Republic

High levels of unemployment, underemployment, and poverty pose long-term challenges to the Dominican Republic. In addition to providing microloans to local entrepreneurs, Opportunity International is providing loans to schools as part of the education finance initiative.

Ghana

Ghana has made important strides in economic development, serving as an example of progress in Western Africa. Yet many families still live right at the poverty line, where one small setback could be devastating.

Learn More

Honduras

With sixty percent of the population living below the poverty line, Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Central America. The nation also suffers from unequal distribution of income and high underemployment.

India

In 1989, Opportunity International began operations in India, home to the largest global concentration of people living in poverty. Opportunity's programs promote financial inclusion for women, ensure that children can go to school, and serve those living in extreme poverty.

Kenya

Opportunity Kenya was established in 2006. The need for stable financial structures became increasingly apparent as the country faced violence and significant political unrest following the disputed presidential elections in December 2007.

Malawi

In Malawi, more than two-thirds of the population lives in extreme poverty—nearly all of whom rely on small-scale farming for their livelihoods. Opportunity equips farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to increase their yields and incomes.

Learn More

Mozambique

Despite its rich natural resources and farmland and advantageous geography, Mozambique ranks in the bottom 10 countries on the UN's Human Development Index. Opportunity International's programs in Mozambique serve vulnerable populations like farmers, women, and youth.

Learn More

Nicaragua

For nearly two decades, Opportunity International has worked with microentrepreneurs in Nicaragua to build sustainable, successful businesses that will break them out of the cycle of poverty.

Learn More

Peru

Peru's diverse population and varied geography is reflected in the uneven distribution of recent economic growth, which has primarily benefitted coastal and urban areas.

Philippines

More than one-fifth of people in the Philippines live below the poverty line, often because of unequal opportunities and the ongoing impact of past natural disasters and conflict.

Rwanda

Though Rwanda has made some remarkable advances since the 1994 genocide, half of the population still lives in poverty. Advancements in education and agriculture will be essential for Rwanda's continued development.

Learn More

Serbia

The breakup of the former Yugoslavia and, more recently, the global economic crisis, has left many economic challenges and a large section of the population unemployed, struggling to rebuild their lives.

Tanzania

One out of every three Tanzanians is self-employed, indicating a high level of microenterprise activity. Only 20 percent of the population, however, has access to a formal bank within an hour's walking distance of their home.

Uganda

In Uganda, 41% of people live in poverty—and almost half the population is under the age of 15. To break the cycle of poverty, young people and other vulnerable groups need education and economic opportunities.
