Bill Pollard Remembrance
Bill Pollard, a longtime partner and friend of Opportunity International, went to his heavenly home this month on June 6th. An iconic business leader, renowned philanthropist, teacher, and lawyer, Bill was a man after God’s heart, who lived out his life and expressed his beliefs through meaningful action, committing himself to serving others, especially those who are left out and left behind.
Bill believed deeply in the power of action and self-determination. His leadership at ServiceMaster Industries, a global cleaning and management services corporation, supported countless companies across various industries and geographies. His exceptional business acumen, coupled with his profound belief in the positive impacts of meaningful work, significantly contributed to the company's growth.
“We’re a company of people. We recognize every person in the true image of God,” Bill told the Tribune in 1986. “Every person is different. The people here are more than a production unit and should be growing spiritually and mentally.”
This same passion drew Bill to Opportunity International. Recognizing what it takes to build a successful business, Bill believed wholeheartedly in the strength, determination, and grit of microbusiness owners to change the world.
Thanks to his decades of support, Opportunity International was able to establish banks and other formal financial institutions across Kenya, Mozambique, and Uganda, assisting hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs at the base of the economic pyramid.
But Bill's contributions went far beyond financial generosity. Known as a profoundly thoughtful and inquisitive leader, Bill’s guidance and commitment to principled business greatly influenced our efforts to remain effective, ethical, and efficient.
“Bill continually pushed us to pursue excellence—whether in programming, fundraising, or communicating our faith. I approached every meeting with considerable preparation, knowing he would delve deeply with challenging and insightful questions, always delivered with grace, kindness, and a genuine passion for the people we served.”
Mark Lutz, Senior Vice President, Philanthropy
Bill worked closely with Opportunity International for over 20 years, serving as a member of our Board of Governors. His involvement attracted additional resources and passionate supporters to our cause, significantly magnifying our impact. His influence across Africa is just one part of his broader legacy of servant leadership.
We at Opportunity International are deeply honored and grateful for the years of dedicated service Bill gave to the poor and vulnerable in this world.
Bill, we pray a benediction over you, a benediction celebrating a life spent loving God and loving others.
