Honor World Refugee Day with the Opportunity Book Club

By Allison Kooser

June 20 is World Refugee Day—an annual reminder to pause and reflect on the enormous challenges that refugees around the world face and the incredible resilience they demonstrate in the face of uncertainty and upheaval. This month, in honor of this important day, the Opportunity Book Club is reading a collection that illuminates the wide range of refugee experiences.

Pick up a copy of We Are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, and meet the real girls behind the statistics of the refugee crisis.

As an international activist, Yousafzai visited many refugee camps; these trips caused her to reconsider her own displacement during her childhood in Pakistan and as a world traveler who could go anywhere but home.

Through the pages of We Are Displaced, she explores her personal story—weaving in the voices of displaced girls she has met on her journeys. Through her compelling stories, you’ll meet girls who have lost community, relatives, friends, and homelands. You’ll learn about their hopes and challenges, fears and dreams, and tenacity in pursuing their goals—experiences that many Opportunity International clients have shared.
