The Book Club is going back to where it all began

By Allison Kooser

Many of you joined us for our Virtual Insight Trip to Colombia last week. Thank you for being part of this special tour—and make sure to check out the recording if you missed it.

This month, our Book Club is also traveling to Colombia through fiction, diving into a popular new novel about the very first country in which Opportunity International gave loans to clients 50 years ago!

Experience the Andes mountains, the city of Bogotá, and the daily lives of one family navigating hopes, dreams, and borders.

How does one family straddle Colombian and American soil? Engel, a dual citizen and the daughter of Colombian immigrants, explores this question through the story of one family. Its five members each get a voice and their stories illuminate Colombia’s recent political history.

Maaza Mengiste, author of The Shadow King (a 2020 Opportunity Book Club pick!), said, "Powerful and poignant, Infinite Country crystallizes the questions we are asking today about migration, family, and our vision of the future."

The New York Times Book Review described Infinite Country as "compulsively readable" and The Washington Post calls Engel "a gifted storyteller whose writing shines even in the darkest corners." It was chosen as a Reese's Book Club Pick and was named a "Most Anticipated Book of 2021" by countless publications, including Esquire, O, The Oprah Magazine, Good Morning America, The New York Post, AARP, Literary Hub, BuzzFeed, and more.

We can't wait to read with you!
