What we’re reading this month

By Allison Kooser

During Women's History Month, we are recognizing remarkable, inspiring women around the world. And today, we are joining our friends in the UK for World Book Day (we'll take any excuse to celebrate great books!).

In honor of these two special holidays, we're reading a novel about a young Ugandan girl searching for meaning and understanding through her relationships with the women in her life.

Join us as we read A Girl is a Body of Water by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi.

A Girl is a Body of Water is a "sweeping and powerful portrait of a young girl and her family: who they are, what history has taken from them, and—most importantly—how they find their way back to each other...[it] is rich in the folklore of Uganda and an arresting exploration of what it means to be a modern girl in a world that seems determined to silence women." (Amazon)

This captivating novel was selected as a 2020 Best Book of the Year by TIME, The Washington Post, and O, The Oprah Magazine.

At Opportunity International, we know that women can be powerful agents for change in their families and communities when given the opportunity. It's why 92% of the people we serve are women, and why we are continually developing new tools and training that help women access the financial services and support they need to thrive. Learn more this month about how we invest in and empower women—and join us as we read about a Ugandan girl, her search for purpose, and the women who shape her story.

We can't wait to read with you!
