Announcing Our August Book Club Selection
Can you believe it’s already the middle of August?
Before we know it, kids will be going back to school (or maybe they already are!)—which is why we’ve selected a Book Club book that is great for the whole family! Get your young learners back in “school mode” by reading our August Book Club book together (there is even a young reader’s version available!).
This month, we are reading:
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba
Called “inspirational,” “amazing,” “heartwarming,” “powerful,” and “important” by countless critics, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind tells the author’s personal story of growing up in Malawi amidst drought and hunger. As a boy, he had a vision to bring electricity and running water to his community, and with determination, ingenuity, and grit, he pursued the unimaginable.
William was celebrated as a TED Fellow, and his story inspires all of us to go after our dreams and improve the communities around us—even when it seems crazy or impossible.
As Amazon describes, “William Kamkwamba was born in Malawi, a country where magic ruled and modern science was mystery. It was also a land withered by drought and hunger. But William had read about windmills, and he dreamed of building one that would bring to his small village a set of luxuries that only 2 percent of Malawians could enjoy: electricity and running water. His neighbors called him misala—crazy—but William refused to let go of his dreams. With a small pile of once-forgotten science textbooks; some scrap metal, tractor parts, and bicycle halves; and an armory of curiosity and determination, he embarked on a daring plan to forge an unlikely contraption and small miracle that would change the lives around him."
