Climbing Mountains, Changing Lives: Our Kilimanjaro Adventure
Twenty years ago, as a 10-year-old girl watching an IMAX documentary about Kilimanjaro, I turned to my mom and said, "I want to do that with you someday." Little did I know that two decades later, this childhood dream would not only come true but also become a powerful vehicle for change through Opportunity International's Team Opportunity.
Our journey to the roof of Africa was more than just a physical challenge—it was a testament to the power of dreams, perseverance, and the incredible impact we can make when we come together for a greater purpose. With the support of friends and family, Team Opportunity raised funds and awareness for Opportunity International's work in Malawi, embarking on an adventure that would push our limits, open our hearts, and teach us invaluable lessons about ourselves and the world.
The Ascent: A Day-by-Day Journey of Discovery
Days 1-2: Entering a New World and Embracing Simplicity
As we stepped through the Rongai Gate, we left civilization behind and entered a world of lush forests and anticipation. The air was thick with moisture and the excitement of new beginnings. Our team of eight climbers was supported by an incredible crew of 35—four guides and 31 porters—a humbling reminder of the communal effort required for this journey.
The landscape transformed rapidly as we ascended, from dense forests to open moorlands. With each step, we felt the growing bond between us and our amazing guides and porters. Their unwavering support and infectious joy set the tone for our climb. As the porter who carried my kit bag—double what I carried in my daypack—Muse (“Moses” in English) often reminded me, "We're a team. We do this together."
Lesson: From the very beginning, we learned the power of community and the importance of relying on others. This mirrors the work of Opportunity International, where a clients’ success is built on the foundation of communal support and collaboration.
The simplicity of life on the mountain was immediately apparent and refreshing. Away from our phones and the constant connectivity of modern life, we found ourselves fully present in each moment. Our days were structured around basic needs—walking, eating, resting. This simplicity brought a clarity of mind that I found profoundly peaceful.
Lesson: In stripping away the complexities of daily life, we discovered the joy of living in the present.
Days 3-4: Acclimatization, Challenges, and Expanding Limits
As we pushed higher, the air thinned, and the vegetation became sparser. The stunning vistas of cloud-covered plains below contrasted sharply with the rugged, alpine desert ahead. We encountered unique flora like the prehistoric giant groundsels, found only on Kilimanjaro.
The physical challenges began to set in: altitude effects, muscle fatigue, and the mental game of endurance. Yet, it was in these moments that the strength of our team shone brightest. We shared stories, encouraged each other, and found plentiful laughter despite the discomfort. The mantra pole pole (“slowly, slowly” in Swahili) became our rhythm, reminding us that steady progress, not speed, was key to our success.
Lesson: We learned that personal growth happens at the edges of our comfort zones. Just as the clients of Opportunity International face challenges in building their businesses, we faced our own hurdles on the mountain. Both journeys require patience, persistence, and the willingness to take one step at a time.
The diversity of the mountain's ecosystems was a powerful reminder of the adaptability of nature. From lush forests to barren rock faces, life found a way to thrive in every zone. This resilience inspired us as we adapted to the changing conditions.
Lesson: Adaptability is key to overcoming challenges. Whether on a mountain or in life, the ability to adjust to new circumstances is crucial.
Days 5-6: The Final Push to Base Camp and Overcoming Doubt
Arriving at Kibo Hut, our base camp at 15,419 feet, the reality of our final challenge loomed large. The rocky, lunar-like landscape mirrored the internal landscape of our emotions—a mix of excitement, nerves, and determination.
The preparation for the summit attempt was a lesson in itself. We checked and rechecked our gear, supported each other's mental preparation, and tried to rest despite our nerves. That night, as I struggled to sleep, I realized that I had to release the goal and accept that it would be alright if I failed to summit. I wrote in my journal, "Lord, for as long as you will allow me, I will climb to you." This prayer would carry me through the most challenging hours ahead.
Lesson: In moments of doubt, having a personal mantra or a deeper purpose to hold onto can provide the strength needed to persevere. This reflects the importance of Opportunity International's work in providing not just financial support, but also hope and purpose to those they serve.
Summit Day: Triumph, Transformation, and Pushing Beyond Limits
Shortly after midnight, we began our final ascent. The darkness was all-encompassing, our world reduced to the small circle of light from our headlamps and the boots of the person ahead. The cold was intense, and the altitude made every step a deliberate effort.
As doubts crept in and fatigue set in, we leaned on each other for encouragement and the unwavering support of our guides. Steven, one of our guides, constantly reminded us, "We are here to help you," embodying the spirit of service that defined our entire journey.
Lesson: The power of perseverance and the importance of a support system became undeniably clear. In our most challenging moments, the encouragement of others can provide the strength we need to continue.
After several long hours in the dark, as if a gift from the heavens, the sun began to rise. The thin sliver of light on the horizon grew into a spectacular sunrise that seemed to be just for us. I couldn't hold back tears of joy and awe as I realized how far we had come in the darkness.
Lesson: Often, our greatest growth happens in the "darkness"—in times of challenge and uncertainty. Just as the sunrise revealed how far we had climbed, the illumination that comes from challenges shows us our true capabilities.
Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro (Uhuru Peak) was a moment of indescribable emotion. We hugged, we cried, we cheered. Standing at the roof of Africa, we were overwhelmed by a sense of accomplishment and gratitude—or each other, for our supporters back home, and for the opportunity to make a difference through our climb.
Lesson: Achievement is sweetest when it's shared and when it contributes to a greater good. Our personal triumph on Kilimanjaro was magnified by the knowledge that it was supporting the vital work of Opportunity International.
The Descent: Reflection, Gratitude, and Lasting Impact
The descent was swift compared to our climb, sliding down scree fields and passing once again through the diverse ecosystems of Kilimanjaro. With each step down, the magnitude of our achievement began to sink in.
Back at the Marangu Gate, parting with our guides and porters was bittersweet. Their kindness, dedication, and joy had been the backbone of our journey. When I asked our lead guide, Dawson, why they showed such care for climbers they might never see again, his answer was profound: "Because I believe we're going to see them all in heaven. These relationships are eternal."
Lesson: Relationships are a treasure that are truly eternal. Every interaction, no matter how brief, has the potential for lasting impact beyond our lifetimes.
Lessons Learned: A Mountain of Wisdom
This journey taught me that our limits are often self-imposed. When my mind said I couldn't go further, I found I was only at 50% of my true capacity. The simplicity of life on the mountain—ree from technology and focused on immediate goals—brought a peace and clarity that I’ve strived to maintain in my daily life.
We learned the true meaning of community and the strength that comes from shared challenges. The bonds formed on the mountain, both within our team and with our guides and porters, showed us the power of human connection in overcoming obstacles.
The journey reinforced the value of persistence and the importance of taking one step at a time. In the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, breaking them down into smaller, manageable tasks makes the impossible possible.
Perhaps most importantly, our Kilimanjaro climb reinforced the mission of Opportunity International. Just as we pushed beyond our perceived limits on the mountain, the individuals supported by Opportunity International are breaking barriers and achieving their dreams. Our climb, challenging as it was, is a metaphor for the uphill battles faced by many around the world—battles that, with the right support and determination, can be overcome.
A Call to Adventure and Impact
As we reflect on this transformative experience, we invite you to consider joining the next Team Opportunity challenge. Whether it's climbing Kilimanjaro or taking on another adventure, the impact goes far beyond personal achievement. It's about being part of a movement that changes lives, including your own.
Our journey didn't end at the summit of Kilimanjaro. It continued in Malawi, where we met some of the women whose lives are being transformed by the programs we support. Seeing firsthand the impact of our efforts added a profound layer of meaning to our climb. It brought full circle the idea that by challenging ourselves, we can create opportunities for others to overcome their own mountains.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your support has not only helped us reach the top of Africa but is also helping individuals around the world reach their own personal summits. Every step we took on Kilimanjaro was a step towards empowerment and opportunity for those served by Opportunity International.
Together, we are climbing mountains and changing lives, one step at a time.
Team Opportunity trained for 22 weeks to prepare for this epic climb. Our 7-day journey took us over 50 miles of walking, gaining over 13,000 feet of elevation to reach the summit at 19,341 feet. Together, our team raised over $188,000 for Opportunity International’s work in Malawi to support 94 women and their families with immediate assistance and empower them to start businesses, generate income, and uplift their families to break the cycle of extreme poverty.
