Celebrating Mothers: Abdul's Story
In honor of Mothers Day on May 13, we are celebrating some of the amazing women we know around the world who are working tirelessly to support their families and create bright futures for their children. Honor the mothers in your life at opportunity.org/mothersday.
Abdul has her hands full. She has three children—the oldest is 23 and the youngest is one and a half. In order to support her family, she processes rice and sells it in the local market. Yet despite her hard work, Abdul struggled to afford her children’s needs. She says, “When the kids used to go to school, it was very hard. There often wasn’t enough food to go around.”
She dreamed about being financially independent and not having to rely on her husband’s earnings as a farmer in order to cover her children’s expenses.

She says, “I want to be able to organize our resources so that my children can build on what I have done. I really want to give my children the opportunities I didn’t have through education. I don’t want my children to go through what I have suffered by not being educated. The only way out is through education.”
With this motivation in mind, Abdul began partnering with Opportunity to grow her business and receive training and support. She used to process two or three bags of rice per week, but after working with Opportunity, she is now able to process ten bags. With more bags, she has more resources—enough to keep her kids in school and give them the education of her dreams.
