Empower Women in AFRICA Through Monthly Giving
When you join The Rise, you become more than a committed donor—you become a partner in life transformation. Your monthly gift directly supports a woman in Malawi, Africa, as she begins an extraordinary journey toward independence and lasting change.
With your support, she’ll join Opportunity International’s business training program, where she’ll gain:
-
Tools to start and grow her own business
-
Financial training so she can build a budget, manage cash flow, and save her profits
-
Support that builds confidence, community, and leadership skills
You’ll receive monthly updates as she builds a brighter future for herself and her family—breaking the cycle of poverty for generations to come.

Before women join The Rise, their sole focus of every day is on how to feed their children. If it’s a good day, she’ll make clay bricks or carry buckets of water for neighbors to earn just enough money to buy a handful of maize flour, which she will mix with water to make nsima, a porridge that is the staple food of Malawi. If it’s not a good day, she will spend all her energy trying to find food and come up empty. That’s why one of the first things we do with your monthly gift is give mothers a stipend for food for six months. When they don’t have to spend all day looking for food, they can instead focus on starting their training with Opportunity, where they will learn business and financial skills from their case worker.
You help support a female entrepreneur by providing the start up costs for her small business.

Women in The Rise will learn to start two businesses—one that provides quick, short-term cash (like a grocery stand) and one that offers longer-term earnings and stability (like raising livestock). She gets to choose what businesses can be most lucrative in her area; then your gift is used to help supply the materials, inventory, or even livestock to get her started!
You help a woman learn basic financial and business skills to earn an income and meet her family's need for the long-term.

Opportunity caseworkers visit clients each work to provide financial education, business training, and offer other holistic support like health and wellness checks. Participants organize into savings groups, where they learn to save small amounts of money each week, so they can eventually make loans to each other. They also create vision boards to map out their path to success—something they hang proudly in their home and reference often on their journey.
PROGRESS OUT OF POVERTY
Three years ago, we launched The Rise with an initial group of 120 families in Blantyre, Malawi. At the start, 100% were living on less than $1.25 a day, and 89% had no access to financial products or services—no savings accounts, no loans, no safety nets.
Today, the change is undeniable.

a message from richard

At Opportunity International Malawi, we work with people that are living in ultra-poverty. They go through a lot of trouble. For example, they do not know what they are going to eat...they don't know what to do to send their children to school. They lose hope. They don't know what tomorrow will bring...thank you for giving them the hope that they need.
