Seeing the Real Nicaragua

Nicaragua is home to great beauty and passion. This Central American country possesses the natural beauty of both Pacific and Caribbean coasts, majestic volcanoes and a rich culture best known for its marimba music and warm hospitality.

Nicaragua’s economy is primarily focused on the agricultural sector. Despite ongoing effects of the Contra War in the 1980s, several recessions and natural disasters, a new sense of pride and confidence is driving Nicaragua’s farmers and artisans toward progress. Even though Nicaragua remains one of the poorest countries in Central America, this sense of hope is inspiring its youth to learn how to support their families by starting income-generating businesses.

To bolster this movement of hope, Opportunity launched the Nicaragua Community Economic Development Program in 2005 to assist with community development from within building upon local assets and investing in local economies. Our programs provide both individual and community-level investments to address sustainable solutions for entrepreneurs, their families and their communities. Travel with us to experience firsthand how Nicaragua is being built up and renewed day by day.

Empowering Women Worldwide

A woman is a change-agent. She can feed her family. Build her business. Raise her kids. Employ her neighbors. She can inspire sustainable transformation and create a new story for herself, her children and her entire community. A woman is powerful and full of often-untapped potential. But first, she needs to be given an opportunity. Opportunity International gives a loan to a woman every 7 seconds. By providing financial tools and training, clients are able to build their businesses, create jobs, support their families and transform their communities. With your help, we can empower women in the developing world to break free from the cycle of poverty.

NAWBO'S Partnership

NAWBO is proud to partner with Opportunity International. Through this important partnership, we are excited to take NAWBO to other parts of the world to learn, and help other women entrepreneurs through our shared belief that entrepreneurism can be a life changer for not only the women business owner, but for so many around her that she aims to lift up. We are glad to offer this Insight Trip so our members can see firsthand the contributions women are making in their communities and their countries.
