Seeing the Real India

India is a country that can’t be explained—it must be experienced. As the seventh largest country in the world with several hundred languages, India is dozens of countries in one. A walk down the street is a feast for your senses: the noisy traffic, the aroma of street food, the cries of vendors, the bright colors of saris and storefronts. It’s a kind of joyful chaos you won’t find anywhere else. 

India also has the largest concentration of impoverished people, with one-third of the world’s poorest people living in India. To address this, Opportunity established Dia Vikas—meaning Lamp of Development. Dia Vikas supports the growth of Indian microfinance by partnering with and investing in poverty-focused microfinance institutions, as well as encouraging start-ups in India’s most underserved areas. 

Since launching Dia Vikas, Opportunity has increased outreach in India from 54,000 to over 1.7 million active loan clients; nearly all are women. Dia Vikas focuses on increasing incomes, rural expansion, job creation and holistic transformation, especially for women. Travel with us to witness firsthand the incredible transformation taking place in the lives our clients in India.
