My mom is superwoman.
She is brilliant and funny and compassionate and adventerous. Sure, she drives me crazy some days. And sure, we are both equally bossy and uncompromising. But at the end of the day, I love her and she loves me.
My mom taught me just how powerful moms are. She showed me how hard and beautiful and frustrating and wonderful raising little humans can be. She showed me what unconditional love looks like. What true generosity looks like. What it looks like to sacrifice your own self-interests in favor of benefitting the lives of your children.
So when I look around the world at the millions of Opportunity International clients - women who are raising their own children, their own families - I get it. I get how difficult it is. And I get how valuable it is.
Because I would not be where I am today without my mother.
Millions of children in the developing world rely upon their mothers to feed them, educate them, raise them and help them survive. These kids are the future of our world - and most of the time, it is a mother who is responsible for their well-being. It is a mother who is tirelessly working and sacrificing and pouring out so that her children have bright opportunities ahead of them.
So this Mother's Day, I'm saying thank you.
I'm saying thank you to the amazing mothers in my own life - my mom, my grandma, my cousins and aunts and college roommates and friends. I'm celebrating Young Ambassadors for Opportunity who are raising up globally-minded babies who will become the world-changers of tomorrow. I'm recognizing the women who have already raised their kids into strong, capable adults - and those that are just beginning the journey of parenting.
And I'm saying thank you to mothers around the world. The moms that are living on so little, yet giving so much. The moms that are doing the hard work of not only surviving in extreme poverty, but raising a family, too. These women are incredible. Superheroes, really. Just like my mom.
Visit the Global Opportunity Quilt and create a patch recognizing an important woman in your life. When you do, you'll be invited to invest in a mother working her way out of poverty. A mother with so much love and determination, who simply needs an opportunity to thrive.
Let's fill the Quilt with messages of gratitude. Messages of encouragement. Messages of love. Let's show our moms - biological or otherwise - how amazing they are, and let's support the moms on the other side of the globe.
Mom, thank you. I love you. Happy Mother's Day.
