I recently had the opportunity to attend theNon-Profit Technology Network’s annual Nonprofit Technology Conference and present on two panels: one on the changing face of donations online and what that means to charities today, and the other on how to approach big issues (and unfortunately, last I checked, poverty is still a big issue).

It was a great conference attended by over 1,400 people who work for various nonprofits from across the spectrum. They were all there to find out how they can: a) do more with less, b) leverage technology to further engage and excite their supporters about the work they do, and c) find best practices from other nonprofits who are seeing success.

Any time you get a chance to be around that many people all actively concerned with the greater good, you have a tremendously positive experience. I had the opportunity to share how we builtOptINnow.org to provide a deeper level of engagement with our supporters. OptINnow connects these supporters with our amazing clients around the world who are using a small business loan from Opportunity International to work themselves out of poverty and impact their communities.

During the panel discussions, I talked about how OptINnow provides a way for people who have been with us for a long time to see the faces of the people their donations have impacted.  It also allows those who are new to the world of microfinance and Opportunity to learn about the incredible tool of microfinance. We really look at OptINnow as a jumping off point for new and existing supporters to better understand our work and further their impact on reducing global poverty by funding individual entrepreneurs. More importantly, they can see the incredible, long-lasting impact of investment in Opportunity’s banking infrastructure in poor countries, and get involved with our work at a deeper level.
